Our First House

The purpose of this post is to document how great our first house in Kirkwood was for the 5 years we called it home.  It was the perfect starter home and we have some great memories there and loved our neighbors.  The street was definitely the best in the neighborhood with the annual porch crawl and easy walk to Steinbecks in Oakhurst.  We miss our friends and the food but have been happy to have a little more breathing space.  We did a lot of work to this house over the years and I may put together a little before & after gallery to show it off.   The listing pictures definitely show off the “after” well but we also cleaned, painted, boxed & stored for a few weeks before these pictures so it’s a little shinier & more spacious than it normally was.

Here are the before (2007) & after (2012) pictures:

The Front: The curb appeal was good when we moved in so we just did a few things over the years in the front.  The biggest & most functional change was to have the driveway graded & extended all the way down to the backyard fence.  This allowed us to fit at least three cars in the driveway instead of just one.  We also tamed some of the landscaping and added more appropriate plants (e.g. removed 2 leyland cypresses planted less than 2 feet from the house).

The Dining Room: Replaced the chandelier & never got around to painting even though it was always on the list.

The Kitchen: We upgraded the kitchen a couple of times in the five years we were here.  The more significant upgrade included painting, moving the refrigerator and reconfiguring/adding cabinets, re-tiling the floor, replacing the backsplash & adding granite counter tops.

The Master Bathroom: Major update in the tiny “master” bath – we re-tiled the floors, replaced the laminate counter with granite, framed the mirror, changed out the lights and removed the fiberglass shower surround & had it tiled & added a glass shower door.

The Nursery: This evolved from a guest room/storage room to the nursery and didn’t get many updates until it became Liam’s room.  We just painted & added blinds.

The Screen Porch: We loved the screen porch at this house.  We had it stained with a paint-stain after the dog ramp was built so that all the wood matched.

The Backyard: All that pretty grass in the backyard died before we  even moved into the house.  We worked hard in that backyard for five years landscaping, building patios and trying to get plants and grass to grow.  The soil just wasn’t very good so we never had much luck even after we had a couple of the large trees removed.   It was a nice yard and very private and I miss having a fence for the dogs.
